Home or favorite faire Home faire is PARF. Being closest and fairly long running, it's also my favorite, but I also make yearly trips to NCRF in Raleigh (love the onsite camping) and I'm hoping to visit other faires in the North East.
About Me Likes? Let's see. . .um. . faire, duh! Got into faire way back during my acting days (that's about 20 years and 50 lbs ago) when I was on cast at PARF. Got back into faire as a playtron a few years back and have been having a blast with it ever since! Apart from garbing up and getting into character, I enjoy reading, gaming, doing pretty much anything outdoors, being a dad (my most enjoyable and important function), going to the gym (a new development for me), and writing (anyone want to read my manuscripts? nudge nudge)
Music In my younger days, I was into what we called "New Wave". Now I'm mostly into reggae and celtic rock. Great Big Sea from Newfoundland is my favorite group these days, caught them in concert in Harrisburg a few months back and they were FANTASTIC!
Movies I like action adventure films with a sci-fi or fantasy bent (LOTR for example), but I'm also a sap for a good romantic comedy. I caught "Music and Lyrics" on a flight to Germany recently and I'm man enough to admit that I laughed AND cried.
TV Lost, Battlestar Galactica (the new one), Special Unit 2 (a recent discovery, pretty much anything on the History or Discovery channels. I also love watching any sort of reality show where people are building or making something, like the original Junkyard Wars or American Chopper or even Ace of Cakes.
Books Tolkien is my greatest influence as a writer, not necessarily because of his fantasy content, but because of the way he approached his writing. Tolkien didn't write stories, he invented a world and allowed stories to unfold in them. Larry Niven does the same thing. I try to follow this ideal in my own writing.
Likes Cool stuff.
Dislikes Stuff that is not cool.
Hobbies Faire of course, and making my own garb for faire. Yes, it's true, I build all my own garb AND I'm straight. Go figure.
Vices Most of them, including drunkenness (on a purely social and occasional basis, I assure you), sloth (except when I go to work or the gym), and lechery (my personal favorite).
Virtues All those which don't interfere with my vices.

Germany Trip

Thursday, June 7, 2007, 09:37 AM [General]

So a couple of weeks ago I went back to Germany for the first time since I lived there as a youngster.  I'm tempted to say "it looked smaller", but really it looked pretty much the way I remember.

Except for the autobahn.  First, there are many more speedlimited regions on the autobahn than I remember; second, the Germans appear to have given up on trimming the verge and much of the roadside has a distinctly neglected and overgrown look, even around rest stops.  This would have been unthinkable when I lived there.

Apart from that, the country remains as naturally beautiful and as blessed with architectural beauty as I remember.

I loaded a small sample of some pics I took into my gallery, feel free to take a look.

For reasons I won't explain here, I did not have my camera with me on the night my colleagues and I went to dinner at this place:

http://www.burg-windeck.de/

Burg Windeck sits on a hill on the edge of the Black Forest overlooking the town of Baden-Baden.  The fortress dates from the year 1200 AD, and consists today of two large towers commanding the top of the outcropping surrounded by a massive wall, beside which sits a small gasthaus and winery.  It doesn't look it in the picture on this website, but the vine-covered slopes drop away from the castle walls at a VERY steep incline, and the dining room perces right at the edge of the cliff, giving diners a dramatic view of the vinyard and the valley beyond.  On a clear day, which sadly the evening of my visit was not, you can see into the hills of France from this vantage point.

Anyway, a couple of times a year, Burg Windeck hosts a "medieval market", which sounds very much like a weekend tent faire.  One of my co-workers on this trip is a fellow rennie, and he and I have vowed to schedule our next trip over to the German home office to coincide with one of these weekends.  I imagine we'll have to ship our steel over before hand - can you imagine trying to get a rapier and main gauche through airport security these days? - but IF I manage to pull this off, I may have much more interesting photos from my next trip.

That's all for now
